In late June, Rep. Hinojosa (District 15) signed a letter echoing AT&T’s claim that merging with T-Mobile is the only way it can extend its mobile network to 97 percent of the population. Representative Hinojosa also signed on to the claim that this merger will “create thousands of jobs … which will greatly contribute to our continuing economic recovery.”
We now know that none of AT&T’s claims are true. Earlier this month an AT&T lawyer inadvertently leaked a document that revealed AT&T can accomplish its network buildout for one-tenth the cost of acquiring T-Mobile. And despite AT&T’s insistence that the deal will spur job growth, the merger will cost an estimated 20,000 American jobs.
Now that the facts are known, Representative Hinojosa must correct the record by taking his name off the June letter.
Pick up the phone and tell your representative to set the record straight on AT&T, remove his or her name from the letter and oppose the AT&T–T-Mobile merger.
I’m calling because Rep. Hinojosa was one of 76 representatives who signed a letter in June arguing that AT&T should acquire T-Mobile to build out high-speed wireless broadband to 97 percent of Americans. The letter also claims that the merger will create U.S. jobs.
Recently leaked documents from AT&T show the company can build its network for one-tenth the cost of buying T-Mobile. Since Rep. Hinojosa signed the letter we have also learned that the merger will cost an estimated 20,000 Americans their jobs.
In light of these new facts, I urge Rep. Hinojosa to set the record straight and take his name off this letter.
